The Rehearsal Dinner

The rehearsal dinner is a time of celebration that also serves as the perfect ice-breaker between you and your family-to-be.

Who to Invite:

You can invite anyone you want to make this occasion joyous, but typically here's who you should send invitations to (include directions to ceremony site and dinner location): Parents of bride and groom, the entire wedding party including spouses or significant others. If there are children in your wedding party, invite the parents. Don't forget the Officiant of your wedding ceremony. If you have guests coming from out of town, inviting them will make them feel welcomed. This of course depends on your budget.

When should we have our rehearsal dinner and who pays for it?

The rehearsal dinner takes place after the ceremony rehearsal and is traditionally hosted by the groom's family on the eve of the wedding. But, as many of you already know, I keep stressing that tradition is changing with the times. Many couples ask both sets of parents to split the cost. It depends entirely on your situation.

Some couples opt to have the rehearsal dinner a couple of days earlier rather than on the eve of the wedding. I highly recommend this since it gives everyone the opportunity to be well rested the night before the wedding...(if that's at all possible!). Unfortunately, this can't always work since many times there will be guests coming from out of town who cannot make it in much earlier than the day before the wedding.

Express your appreciation:

Since this event is more intimate and less formal than the wedding itself, it is the perfect opportunity to express appreciation and gratitude to your loved ones in a relaxed atmosphere. You might consider presenting the attendants' gifts on this occasion, but be careful not to forget offering a gift of thanks to anyone who has helped you along the way.

Planning Tips:

Make sure you arrange the date for the ceremony rehearsal first. Then choose a restaurant that you know has good atmosphere and food either because you experienced it directly or because you heard about it through a friend.

Most any restaurants welcome big parties. They just need to know about it as far in advance as possible.

Here's A Hot Money-Saving Tip!

Ask for a prix fix (fixed price).

Usually restaurant owners are willing to offer 2 or 3 dishes (possibly chicken, red meat and vegetarian) at a discounted price. If they agree to a prix fixed, the whole deal will include 2 or 3 choices in appetizer, coffee and dessert. Even if they give you a "party deal" on the dinners alone, it's worth it. If you don't ask, you won't necessarily get!

Enjoy and have fun!
